I have to be honest though, even the top of the range dart boards are pretty inexpensive.

Today's dart boards, specifically the ones made by all the big manufacturers such as Winmau, Unicorn, Nodor, Target etc, are all pretty much the same apart from the wiring which separates all the scoring segments.
The cheaper priced lower end of the market dart boards usually feature round wires with staples holding them in place on the dartboard. Typically, this makes the scoring area smaller as the wires are thicker. Another negative feature of the round wires are and staples is the fact that they make the thrown darts prone to bounce outs. If you're not sure what a bounce out is, it's when a dart hits the wire or staple and bounces straight back out the board, usually in the direction of the person who has just thrown it........not a very nice experience.
As you make your way through the various ranges of each big names dart board, you find wires getting thinner and most notably, a lack of staples.
The top of the range dartboards that you see on TV are the Winmau Blade 4 Dartboard and the Unicorn Eclipse HD Dartboard.
I have personally used both of these boards over the past few years and for me, there isn't much to chose between them visually however I find the Winmau board last a lot longer. The biggest issue I have with the Unicorn Eclipse is after a few months or so, the wires start to protrude out of the board itself and so tends not to last as long as the Winmau equivalent.
With all the deals online today, I would class even the top of the range boards as cheap dart boards and in all honesty, I would go for one of these simply for the wiring system.
I hope this helps you make an easier decision.
