If you read my earlier review of the Premier League Darts Week 1 then you will know that poor Michael Smith had to play twice on his debut night because Gary Anderson had to withdraw.
Not only did he lose both games with scorelines of 7 - 2 and 7 - 1 against but he only averaged 85 in his first game and 80 in his second......not the sort of averages you expect from any player competing in the tournament.
Well today, at the UK Open qualifiers, Smith bounced back and in some style.
Not only did he whitewash poor Jermaine Wattimena by 6 legs to nil, he did it with an incredible 132.62 average. He reeled off legs of 12, 11, 11, 11, 12, and finally 11 darts which absolutely destroyed his opponent.
I know many people will say this event is behind closed doors with no crowds or live TV etc but it's still a competition which all the best players in the world are at and the pressures are still there. And if you are one of the people scoffing at this, when was the last time you played darts of that quality? Bet you haven't even done it on the practice board at home on your own.
Now Smith is a youngster in his early to mid 20's and is gonna be around a long time and surely has future World Champion written all over him....hopefully he can fully recover from his first weeks mishap in Leeds and at least turn in some impressive performances and start getting some points on the Premier League Darts scoreboard.
